Pietenpol project started in July 2010. I have had my “private” since 1995, but have not been able to fly much in the past 5 years. My other love is woodworking, so I decided to marry my two passions. When I started to look at wooded airplanes, I discovered two things – EAA 1114 and the Pietenpol. Jack Phillips was kind enough to give me a ride in his beautiful Piet and the rest in history. I have also really enjoyed the time I have been able to spend with the guys at the Bear Creek Aero Club.

If I had a clone and a large walkout basement full of tools like Jack Phillips does, I would build a KZ VIII. A design from the prolific Swedish engineer Bjoern Andreasson (Buecker Bestmann and Jungman, Cynet, MFI-09, SAAB Sonnett sports car, etc.), it is said that the KZ VIII inspired Walter Extra to stop building Pitts and develop his early monoplane aerobatic ships. Its line are sensuous, and I like working with wood. Niels Nielsen and I have seen two of only three KZ VIIIs in the world at the great Danmarks Flymuseum in Stauning, Denmark. The picture here is of a recent creation, a blue KZ VIII built and flown by former Danish Air Force Draken/F-16 pilot Hardy Vad. The white and red one is an original, with an inline engine.

Below is a picture of my Sonex project. The project took me 1000 hours and 5 years to complete. The first flight was in October 2008 as a Tri-Gear configured Sonex. In 2010, I converted it to a taildragger and I've been very happy with the conversion. The airplane cruises at 140-150 mph burning 6.5 gph.
Things unique to my Sonex...I have a Jabiru 3300 120HP 6 port fuel injected engine, Electric Flaps, and all the bells and whistles you could want.
Upcoming Projects/Additions: Wheel Pants, Wing Leading Edge Tape, Hangar Wing Covers, Custom Tug and Towbar. Flap to Fuselage Seals.

Here is the first posting of an EAA1114 project. The Bear Creek Aero Club, formed by EAA1114 members and headquartered at the Bear Creek Skunkworks (Terry Gardner's hangar at Eagles Landing, Pittsboro, NC), is completing its first project, a rare Stits SA-7D Skycoupe. This airplane, designed by the famous Ray Stits, was one of the most popular homebuilts of the 1960s. You'll find our main blog at this link. General Aviation News published a brief article on our efforts on 9/1/2011, read it here. Below is an image of a completed Skycoupe.
